ANN ARBOR, Mich. – No. 22 Pepperdine suffered its first setback of the season with a 2-0 loss Friday afternoon at No. 11 Michigan. The Waves (2-1-1) could not get their third result against a top-25 opponent this season as the Wolverines (5-0-0) remained perfect in 2013.
Michigan wasted no time in cracking the scoreboard as Holly Hein’s header off a corner kick put Michigan up 1-0 in the fifth minute. Nkem Ezurike added an insurance goal in the 23rd minute, narrowly eluding the hands of Pepperdine freshman goalkeeper Hannah Seabert (Riverside, Calif./Woodcrest Christian HS).
“This was a tough game,” Pepperdine head coach Tim Ward said. “We learned a hard lesson today and that is it’s not in our best interest to allow the other team an early goal. Simple as that sounds, it killed us today as we were chasing the game from the get go. It’s almost as if the score was 1-0 from the kickoff considering how early they scored. I'm sure Michigan will go on and have a wonderful season as their staff and players are doing a nice job. I'm also certain this game will educate us and help us become a better team moving forward.”
Pepperdine created several legitimate scoring chances and held a 16-14 shot advantage for the contest, including a 9-7 edge in the scoreless second half. The Wolverines held a 7-3 lead in shots on target. Lynn Williams (Fresno, Calif./Bullard HS), a MAC Hermann Award Watch List selection, led the Waves with a match-high five shots. Ally Holtz (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Katie Gallanes (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) each recorded three shots for Pepperdine.
Seabert (2-1-1) suffered the first loss of her young career and made five saves while facing 14 shots and four corner kicks. Taylor Bucklin earned the win for the Wolverines and collected three saves.
Pepperdine concludes its Midwest swing when it takes on Toledo Sunday, September 8. Kick off against the Rockets is set for 9:00 a.m. from Scott Park in a game featuring a live local television broadcast on BCSN.
