No. 23 Warhawks Topple Stout 4-1
It didn't take long for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team to start a new Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference winning streak. UW-Whitewater, ranked 23rd in the country and coming off of their first regular season conference loss since 2011, traveled to UW-Stout Saturday and came away with a convincing 4-1 victory to improve to 14-3 overall and 5-1 in the WIAC. With the loss, the Blue Devils fall to 6-7-3 overall and 2-4-1 in the WIAC.
From the kick-off, it was all UW-Whitewater. Two shots on goal in the 12th minute, one in the 16th minute and one in the 20th minute kept UW-Stout on the defense.
Carly Pottle (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) put the Warhawks on the board in the 21st minute when she bent a corner into the net for her tenth goal of the season. Just over a minute later, Brianna Reid (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) scored her team leading 17th goal of the year on a pass from Pottle to give the Warhawks a 2-0 advantage. Reid is third in the Warhawk record books for goals in a season, three shy of second and seven short of first.
The Warhawks made it 3-0 six and a half minutes before halftime when Karina Rosales (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) scored off of a pass from Sierra High (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central).
Stout finally notched their first shot of the game in the 40th minute, but it sailed wide and at halftime the Warhawks led 3-0.
The crossbar was the Warhawks' enemy in the second half. Mackenzie Serbousek (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Cedar Rapids Prairie), Reid and Rosales each fired a shot that hit the crossbar.
On a counter attack in the 76th minute, UW-Stout made their way onto the scoreboard to make it 3-1.
Kara Jahn (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) got that goal back in the 82nd minute scoring off of a pass from Rosales to bring the final score to 4-1.
The Warhawks outshot the Blue Devils 22-6 in the match, including 14-3 on goal. Erin Doody (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) made two saves for the Warhawks.
With one game left on their regular season schedule, UW-Whitewater is currently a half game back of first place in the WIAC. The top six teams make it into the league tournament with the top two seeds earning first round byes. The Warhawks will travel to UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday for a match at 7 pm.
