No. 25 UCSD Edged at No. 11 Cal State L.A.
LOS ANGELES - The 25th-ranked UC San Diego men’s soccer team allowed a lone score early in the second half and dropped a narrow 1-0 decision to No. 11 Cal State L.A. in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) South Division showdown Sunday afternoon at Jesse Owens Track.
With its first loss of 2013, UCSD fell to 2-1-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the CCAA. Cal State L.A. remained a perfect 4-0 overall and 2-0 in league play following a second straight 1-0 result this weekend to begin the conference schedule.
The only goal of the contest came courtesy of Golden Eagle substitute Troy Dumlao, who placed his right-footed shot past the reach of UCSD’s senior All-American goalkeeper Josh Cohen just 61 seconds into the second half after the Tritons had turned the ball over near the edge of their own penalty area. It was an unassisted first collegiate strike for the redshirt freshman midfielder.
UCSD managed just four shots on the day, to CSULA’s eight. Three of those came from junior striker Alessandro Canale, with two of them on target. Canale’s seventh-minute header was saved by the Golden Eagle goalie. Fourth-year senior midfielder Taylor Wirth (Escondido/La Costa Canyon HS) was credited with the other attempt.
Cohen and junior counterpart Mike Beigarten each made a pair of stops for their respective sides. Beigarten turned in his second clean sheet in three days.
UCSD concludes a season-long four-match road stretch to open conference play next weekend at No. 18 Chico State and Cal State San Bernardino.
Triton Notes: Cal State L.A. now leads the tight all-time series, 12-11-2 ... The Tritons have dropped five straight meetings since a 1-0 victory in Los Angeles on Oct. 10, 2010 ... Senior All-American center back Alec Arsht returned to the Triton lineup after missing Friday night’s game at Cal State Dominguez Hills ... Freshman Malek Bashti made his second successive start, while fellow newcomer A.J. Beloff played a season-high 22 minutes off the bench ... Sunday’s match marked an eighth straight dating back to the end of the 2012 season in which UCSD held its opponent to no more than one goal.
