NO.4 UNC DEFEATS NO. 15 ODU, 3-0
CHAPEL HILL, NC—The fourth ranked Tar Heels of North Carolina (8-1) defeated 15th ranked Old Dominion 4-2), 3-0 Tuesday night at Fetzer Field.
The Tar Heels took the lead with about 15 minutes left in the first half as Martin Murphy passed to Matt Hedges off a corner who headed it to Kirk Urso at the top of the box who fired it in for the goal.
Three minutes into the second half, the Tar Heels were awarded a penalty kick after an ODU foul in the box. Enzo Martinez made the PK with a shot to the right side of the net for a 2-0 lead. Rob Lovejoy added the final goal with 1:21 left in the match.
Midway in the second half ODU’s Jordan LeBlanc’s pass to Yannick Smith just outside the box where he flicked it in for a goal, but was offsides. Chris Harmon led ODU with three shots, including two shots on goal, while Tim Hopkinson had two shots and one shot on goal.
UNC outshot ODU, 26-11 overall and 10-3 in shots on goals. The shutout was the fourth for Goodwin, while ODU’s Francoz came up with seven saves.
The Monarchs return home Friday night for a CAA match against Delaware at 7 p.m.
