No. 7 Cal Falls at No. 4 UConn, 4-1
Mike Munoz Scores for Golden Bears
STORRS, Conn. – Michael Munoz scored his first goal of the season for seventh-ranked California, but fourth-ranked Connecticut defeated the Golden Bears, 4-1, in a nonconference match on Sunday at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. Cal's record now stands at 1-1-1 after the nonconference match; UConn has a 3-0-0 record. Mamadou Diouf scored a hat trick for the Huskies, who also got a goal from Tony Cascio.
Cal trailed 2-0 before Munoz scored, with sophomore defender Ryan Neil assisting the junior forward at 60:11. Munoz latched onto Neil’s long throw and flicked the ball inside the far post.
Diouf, assisted by Cascio, scored at 16:06 to give UConn a 1-0 lead that it took into halftime. He converted a pair of penalty kicks for his other two goals. The first came at 46:25, giving UConn a 2-0 lead.
Munoz’s goal cut the lead to 2-1, but the Huskies came back as Cascio struck at 61:14 to make the score 3-1.
Diouf, who was fouled both times to set up his team’s PKs, converted his second from the penalty spot at 82:00 to make the score 4-1.
Cal sophomore goalkeeper Robby Gogatz made four saves against UConn, which outshot Cal, 19-8.
Cal returns to Berkeley to host the Cal Legacy Classic on Friday, Sept. 9, and Sunday, Sept. 11. The Bears play Lehigh at 4 p.m. on Friday and play Kentucky at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
