No. 9 Women's Soccer Battles Rain, Patriots To 1-1 Draw
GOLDEN – NSCAA No. 9 Colorado School of Mines overcame a 1-0 deficit and wet conditions from the onset of the second 45:00 to earn a 1-1 draw with visiting Dallas Baptist in the season-opener Thursday evening at CSM Soccer Stadium.
DBU (0-0-1) began the scoring in the 23rd minutes via a conversion at the penalty stripe by Lea Sedwick following a foul on a carry into the top of box.
The Orediggers (0-0-1) produced the equalizer just 3:59 into the second half; senior Kendra Bulawa laid a cross from outside the right corner of the 18 to front net where junior Deirdre Johnson held back a defender on her left shoulder for an eight-yard header the right net.
The score was part of an 8-0 second-half shot advantage for Mines, which ended the night plus-11 on shots (19-8) and plus-6 on shots on goal (8-2).
Johnson led all players with four of six looks on frame. Sophomore Anna Deleray placed two on target, while freshmen Emily Garnier and Devon Dunmire each added one.
Junior RMAC Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year Jayln Yates (0-0-1) collected one save across the full 110:00 minutes.
Mines continues its season-opening week at 12 p.m. Saturday in Golden against Lone Star Conference member West Texas A&M.
