Olajide Does It Again! Terrier edge Peacocks
St. Francis Brooklyn senior forward Yussuf Olajide scored with 2:24 remaining in the second overtime to lift the Terriers to a 2-1 victory against Saint Peter's on Wednesday evening at Brooklyn Bridge Park. The Terriers, who have now played four straight overtime contests, improved to 3-3-2 on the season.
Olajide, who also scored the game-winning goal against NJIT in double-overtime just a week ago, took a gorgeous feed from junior Dominick Falanga from the 50-yard line and made a run down the right side of the pitch. Olajide, beat two defenders and booted a low blast to the far post that beat Peacocks' keeper Jamie Cleland from about 15 yards away. Cleland had left his position and ran out towards Olajide.
Saint Peter's (1-4-2) took a 1-0 advantage in the 38th minute as senior midfielder Luke Fairlamb drilled a shot from 15 yards out, beating Terriers' keeper Roberto Bazzichetto to the upper left corner.
The Peacocks did not allow the hosts to take a shot in the opening 45 minutes, but the Terriers dominated play in the second half to turn the game around.
St. Francis Brooklyn had several outstanding scoring opportunities but it took nearly the entire second-half to finally get the equalizer.
Junior Federico Curbelo had the first chance just four minutes into the stanza but his blast from 25 yards out sailed just wide of the far post.
Reigning Northeast Conference Player of the Week Faouzi Taieb narrowly missed on the next opportunity with 30:24 left, as his header off a free kick by Curbelo trickled just wide of the near post.
Just seconds later, Olajide beat his man to the ball in the box to set-up another great chance. Cleland left his position and Olajide sent a perfect cross along the goal line to the far side. However, there wasn't a Terrier in position to stuff the ball into the open net.
The Terriers finally got the equalizer with just 3:53 left after a mistake by Cleland, who punched the ball directly to Terriers' sophomore midfielder Tommy De Andrade in the box. De Andrade then found a wide open Salvatore Barone, who capitalized with a low shot to the far post.
St. Francis Brooklyn played tremendous defense in the overtime and almost won the game in the first 10 minute period. Falanga had an open net after receiving a feed from Olajide, but his attempt sailed over the goal with 4:42 left.
The Terriers continued to knock on the door in the second overtime until Olajide sealed the victory.
St. Francis Brooklyn outshot the visitors by a 16-11 margin after the Peacocks led in the category at the half, 5-0.
Bazzichetto made three saves in his first career start for the Red & Blue, who will host Howard on Alumni Day this Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
