Overtime Tie Again
Buckhannon, W.Va. -- Men’s Soccer records their third tie of the season against Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals with the game finishing 1-1 on Wednesday evening.
An energetic start from the Bobcat’s resulted in an early lead. Mike Geiselhart was fouled 25 yards out and it was Rodrigo Bevaqua who stepped up curling his free kick up and around the wall, past the grasping hand of the Cardinal’s goalkeeper Cody Thompson.
In the 18th minute, Jordan Halpern wide on the left crossed the ball in for Richard Sho-Silva but he was unable to keep the header down.
Joey Ferraracci almost created a goal for Wesleyan in the 27th minute, when he recovered an over hit ball and hit a low cross for Matthew Brown, who’s first time shot was saved by Thompson.
Wesleyan’s goalkeeper Derek Ayers was almost caught off guard in the 30th minute when an over hit cross from wide on the right forced him to make the save.
Wheeling Jesuit continued to apply pressure through an abundance of corner kicks, long throw –ins, and free kicks. In the 40th minute, the cardinals grabbed their equalizer through Tom Walsh who was on the receiving end of a pass from Luke Roan.
The Cardinal’s thought they took the lead just before the half but the goal was disallowed due to a misplaced ball on the corner kick.
The second half saw the Bobcat’s looking increasingly more dangerous going forward, and in the 57th minute, a push on Bevaqua in the Cardinal’s box resulted in a penalty kick. Wesleyan’s Captain Brown stepped up to take it but shot it high.
With 67 minutes played, a powerful run by Brown ended up with him in the box but his shot narrowly missed the far post.
Brown was involved again in the 82nd minute when he linked up with Halpern on the edge of the box. Halpern worked himself a yard on his right foot but his shot was straight at Thompson.
With just 2 minutes left in normal time, a cross from Sho-Silva was met by Brown 6 yards out but he failed to keep his shot down.
The first period of overtime was a stalemate with neither team creating anything worthwhile. Wesleyan looked the stronger team in the second period of overtime but failed to capitalize on their chances.
Ferarracci had back to back chances in the 102nd and 104th minute, with his first shot hitting the side netting and then his header from a Bevaqua cross going wide.
The last chance of the game fell to Halpern. Brown ran the ball deep from his own half playing in Bevaqua down the left hand side. Bevaqua’s cross found the near post run of Halpern who could not steer his shot on target.
Wesleyan outshot Jesuit 17-10 but only had 8 corners to their 10. Cardinal’s Thompson was called into action 7 times whereas Ayers only made 4 saves.
The Bobcats are now 2-1-2 in the Mountain East Conference, and 3-3-3 overall. Men’s Soccer is back in action Saturday October 5 when they travel to Charleston for a 7:00pm kick off.
