Owls edge Patriots 1-0 on first-half PK
WAYNE, PA - A trio of penalty kicks was one too many for Francis Marion University to overcome as a spot attempt with 41 seconds left before halftime gave Temple University a soggy 1-0 win over the Patriots, Friday afternoon (Sept. 23) in women's college action.
Francis Marion drops to 3-7-1. Despite being held scoreless for the last four matches, FMU has only allowed five tallies in those four contests. The Patriots will face the United States Naval Academy on Sunday at 2 p.m.
FMU senior goalkeeper Lauren Vetock stopped penalty kicks in the 42nd and 79th minutes. However, following a Francis Marion handball in the box, Karly O'Toole converted on the ensuing penalty kick at 44:19 for her first score of the season.
Temple (3-5-0) outshot Francis Marion 12-8, but the Patriots took two of the match's three corner kicks.
Vetock finished with five saves, while the Owls' Tara Murphy made four stops.
All eight of FMU's shots were taken by different players. Senior Erin Breen had the Patriots' final attempt, but her shot was handled by Murphy with 8:13 left in regulation.
