Panthers and Huskies Battle to 2-2 Draw in Double Overtime
September 10, 2011
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican women''s soccer team twice held one-goal leads against visiting Michigan Tech on Friday afternoon, but the Panthers could not hold the advantage as they battled the Huskies to a 2-2 tie in two overtimes.
Freshman Jordan Mazzi (Galena, OH) opened the game''s scoring with a header in the 13th minute to the far post off an ideal cross from the right wing endline by Jennifer Holton (Jr./Johnstown, OH) for her first collegiate score and the first goal by the Panthers this year.
Just over ten minutes later the Huskies got on the scoreboard as McKenzie Hengesh found Katie Boardman with a pass up the middle, and Boardman sent it to the post from the far right wing about 12 yards out.
With 3:44 remaining in the first, ODU grabbed their second lead as Megan Augusta (So./Lyndhurst) finished a long pass ahead by classmate Olivia Scalzitti (Brecksville, OH), outrunning a Huskies defender for the breakaway score to the far post from 17 yards deep.
MTU (2-1-1, 0-1-1) wasted little time tying the score at 2-2 as an ODU turnover in the defensive third allowed Hengesh to connect on the equalizer from the right wing with just over a minute left in the frame.
Both teams had scoring chances in the second half and overtimes period, but several key saves by the keepers, a penalty kick missed wide by the Huskies in the 70th minute and a shot off the corner crossbar resulted in the first tie of the season for both squads.
Freshman Laura Clark (Lapeer, MI) earned the draw in goal with 10 saves, including five in the second stanza and three in the extra sessions.
ODU (0-2-1, 0-0-1 GLIAC) returns to Panther Field this Sunday, Sept. 11 as GLIAC North Division foe, Northern Michigan, visits for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
