Panthers Run League Win Streak To Five
MILWAUKEE - A pair of early goals helped send the Milwaukee men's soccer team on its way to a 3-0 victory over IUPUI Saturday evening on "Senior Night" at Engelmann Stadium.
"I was really pleased with the start," UWM head coach Kris Kelderman said. "The guys were in a good frame of mind and we knew the victory was really important with everything going on in the conference standings right now."
The Panthers (9-5-3, 5-3-0 Horizon League) dominated the Jaguars (0-13-2, 0-8-0 Horizon League) on the stat sheet, enjoying a 21-to-8 shot advantage on the night as the squad won its fifth in a row in Horizon League play.
"It's a little bit of everything," Kelderman said of the winning streak. "We try and emphasize the little things. I have said it before – our team defense, our willingness to work hard and fight for each other on both halves of the field. Everybody has been a little bit sharper on the ball. We've seen some good team performances, but individually, we have had guys making plays and you need that."
Milwaukee recorded 12 shots before intermission and had things going early. The first goal came in the eighth minute, with Jaime Colin netting his third of the season on a nice give-and-go, getting a back heel pass from Evan Conway in the box and taking care of the rest for the 1-0 lead at the 7:35 mark.
Next, it was Conway again, this time unassisted and less than eight minutes later. After picking up a turnover at the back line, he spun the defender into the turf to create the opening, firing into the net at the 15:21 mark for his team-leading seventh goal of the season.
UWM had some opportunities to really open the game up, with a Moon header in the in the 30th minute going just high after taking a hit from the charging IUPUI keeper.
Freddy Lorenzen came up with four saves for his eighth shutout of the season. One of them was huge in the 49th minute, charging off his line after a turnover created a 1-on-1 opportunity, turning the ball away to keep the score at 2-0 at the time.
It was Moon again in the 60th minute, carrying the ball the final 40 yards into the goal box before chipping it over the final defender, but it went off the left post.
The lead grew to 3-0 at the 63:35 mark, when Jake Kelderman headed in a free kick from Vuk Latinovich for his first collegiate goal.
The Panthers almost made it 4-0 late, but Thibault Ceulemans' close-range shot went just left of the post after playing a give-and-go with Henrik Fennefoss.
In addition to the 21-8 shot differential, UWM held slim advantages of 6-to-4 in shots on goal and 3-to-2 in corner kicks. Moon led the team with five attempts.
Up next, the Panthers hit the road for their final game of the regular season, traveling to Michigan to play Oakland Friday. Game time is set for 6 p.m. CST.
