Panthers Take Down Assumption, 3-0
Box Score
Worcester, MA – The men's soccer team recorded their third straight shutout victory earlier this evening against Assumption in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. A pair of Panther goals early in the first, coupled with solid defensive play paved the way for a 3-0 Adelphi win on the road. The victory marks their third straight shutout win as they boost their record to 6-4, 5-3 NE-10 while Assumption slips to 2-5-2, 0-5-2 NE-10.
Four of the Brown and Gold's eight points on the night came off of the feet of freshman midfielder, Caelan Hueber. Just 1:15 after the first whistle blew, Hueber, on an unassisted play, scored what would be the game winner and gave the Panthers the very early 1-0 advantage. Hueber also struck again in the late stages of the second in the 80th minute when teammate Juan Aguiar set him up for his second goal of the game, and his fourth of the season.
The assist from Aguiar marks his third game with at least one point and his fifth over the last three games. Senior captain, Nicholas Costa, added an insurance goal when he was fouled inside the box in the 15th minute, resulting in a penalty kick. The veteran midfielder capitalized on the opportunity and gave the Brown and Gold their second goal; Costa's first of the season.
Adelphi led in shot attempts, 16-10 but were doubled up on corner attempts, 4-2. Their backfield comprised of Julian Hohns, TJ Butler, John Sabal and Jordan Hibbert, along with keeper Ahmad Salamah, recorded the third straight shutout victory with the 3-0 win. Salamah made seven saves in net and earned his third win of the season.
Coach's Thoughts on the Game
"We were very lucky tonight to score early on against Assumption," explained Head Coach Carlo Acquista. "They are a very difficult team to play against on the road. It was great to see Caelan score two goals tonight. And tons of credit to the back line and Ahmad in goal for another clean sheet."
