Patriots top Trojans with road shutout
MOUNT OLIVE, NC – After suffering its first loss of the season over the weekend, Francis Marion University defeated the University of Mount Olive 2-0 on the road in men’s soccer action on Wednesday night (Sept. 16).
A five-match home stand awaits the Patriots (3-1-1) starting with non-conference games against Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday (Sept. 19) at 7 p.m. and Chowan next Thursday (Sept. 24) at 7 p.m. FMU has its Peach Belt Conference home opener against Montevallo on Sept. 26 with kickoff set for 4 p.m.
Freshmen Anton Jonsson and Levin Sandmann scored the two goals in the contest for Francis Marion for their second goals of the season.
Jonsson found the back of the net in the opening half on a header in the top corner of the goal off a cross from Peter Besineau at the 12:19 mark.
With less than 25 minutes left in the game, Sandmann scored after senior Sven Ricke dribbled into the box and dumped it off to him for the second goal.
Both teams tallied the same amount of shots on goal, seven, and the Patriots won the shot battle 14-13 over the Trojans (2-2-0).
Jonsson led the Patriots with four shots taken, three on goal. Sophomore Harrison Smith picked up three shots in the match and leads the team with 17 shots this season.
Freshman goalkeeper Jonathan Mannes rebounded to record his third shutout of the year by stopping all seven shots taken by Mount Olive.
