Phoenix Sting Panthers in Overtime, 2-1
MILWAUKEE - Audi Jepson scored at the 94:45 mark of overtime to send Green Bay to a 2-1 victory over the Milwaukee men's soccer team Saturday night at Engelmann Stadium.
"It is always a tough game against Green Bay and I give them a lot of credit," Milwaukee head coach Kris Kelderman said. "They are a very dangerous attacking group."
The Panthers (2-2-1, 0-1-0 Horizon League) used last-second dramatics by Jonathan Stadler to tie the Phoenix (2-0-2, 1-0-0 Horizon League) in the final moments of regulation, only to see the visitors escape with the victory and the Chancellor's Cup midway through the first extra session.
"I thought we played a really good first half," Kelderman said. "I thought we controlled the tempo of the game, our possession was good – we created some chances and had a good number of shots and felt good about things at halftime. I think we lost our way a bit in the second. They picked it up a notch and maybe we got a little too comfortable."
Scoreless until the 79:33 mark, Jepson had the first goal of the night as well, finding the back of the net to put Green Bay ahead.
Milwaukee kept pushing and kept pushing, with Stadler providing the thriller with just eight seconds left in regulation when he fired home a header from Evan Conway from a tough angle at the post to square the game up at 1-1 and send the crowd of 837 into a frenzy.
The Panthers dominated possession and chances all night, eventually building advantages of 19-to-10 in shots, 8-to-3 in shots on goal and 8-to-1 in corner kicks.
But it was Green Bay that snuck in the winner, with Jepson getting free in the middle after a centering pass, skimming the left post on the way in to end it.
"Granted we outshot these guys 18-10, but at the same time, I think our chances in the second half – as far as quality goes – weren't as good as theirs," Kelderman said.
UWM had its fair share of decent opportunities and it started early. In the game's first minute, Magnus Flaatedal put a strong header on goal off a corner kick, but a nice save from Nikola Kahvedzic kept it scoreless.
Nick Moon gave it a go on a handful of occasions, sending a low attempt on the ground in the 30th minute for starters. Kahvedzic then barely pushed up a bending kick from Moon seconds before intermission.
Conway's volley off a long serve went just high in the 49th and Moon was denied on the break in the 54th minute as well.
The visitors nearly broke through on a couple of occasions, hitting the post in the 75th and 80th minute before finding the first goal.
Flaatedal also rifled a shot over the crossbar off a feed from Moon in the 88th minute that looked promising.
Moon paced the offense with five shots. Freddy Lorenzen was credited with one save in goal. Kahvedzic ended the night with seven.
Following the tough loss, the Panthers are right back at it, hosting UMKC Tuesday at Engelmann Stadium in a game that will kick off at 7 p.m.
