GAMBIER — Kenyon College scored a pair of goals in the first 7 minutes of play en route to handing Wilmington College a 3-1 setback in non-conference women’s action Wednesday night.
The Quakers are now 2-4-2 on the season while Kenyon improves to 5-2-0.
Kenyon, the third-ranked team in the Great Lakes Region, jumped to a 1-0 lead when Becca Romaine scored in the fifth minute of play.
The advantage grew to 2-0 when Caddie Durrett scored in the eighth minute.
“We really didn’t start playing until we gave up two goals,” Wilmington head coach Steve Spirk said. “We just didn’t go to the ball. They were beating us to the ball. Good teams will punish you if you don’t come out ready to go and take care of the ball.”
Both teams had plenty of scoring chances over the ensuing 37 minutes, but neither found netting as Kenyon took the two-goal lead to the break.
“We had some quality chances after they scored their second goal. Their keeper came up big and made some big saves,” Spirk said.
After being out-shot 11-8 in the first half, Wilmington took the game to Kenyon in the second period. Shots, however, did not produce goals.
Wilmington’s comeback hopes were dimmed when Kenyon went up 3-0 with a goal in the 82nd minute.
The Quakers’ diligence finally paid off when freshman Lauren Hamrock (Beavercreek) scored her first collegiate goal in the 86th minute to help Wilmington avert a shutout.
“Lauren did a nice job coming off the bench. She gave us some offense, which is what we’ve been asking our outside mids to give us. She definitely made that happen,” Spirk said.
For the game, Wilmington took 16 shots to Kenyon’s 15. Both teams put seven attempts on goal. Wilmington owned a 7-6 edge in corner kicks.
Wilmington will open Ohio Athletic Conference play when Mount Union visits Charlie Gilhart Field for a 5 p.m. game Saturday.
“Our four losses were to good North Coast Athletic Conference teams — teams that are capable of being in their conference tournament final four,” Spirk said. “The question is are we learning from and getting better from our experience? That’s going to be the challenge.”
