Queens Women's Soccer Blanks Pace, 1-0
Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. - The Queens College women's soccer team evened its record at 1-1 with a 1-0 blanking of Pace in the final game of the Mercy Kickoff Classic from Dobbs Ferry on Saturday. Erin Vernillo had the game's lone goal.
In another sweltering day along the Hudson, it was the Knights' defense that was suffocating as they held the Setters to just four shots-on-goal. All four attempts were turned aside by QC goalie, Mersina Onesto.
Pace had a pair of shots in thew first twenty minutes before the Knights could respond. In the 27th minute, Karysa Pikoulas was on the side and put one into the 18-yard box. Vernillo got her head to it and put it inside the far post to give Queens a 1-0 lead.
The Setters had three more shots but the Knights took the 1-0 cushion into halftime. QC had a second opportunity to score just past the hour mark when Nicolette SCrozzo flicked the ball at net and was turned aside by Lauren DeSousa.
Taylor Bonanno had the other shot in the game by Queens. This was the first clean sheet of the season for Onesto and the Knights defense.
The team returns to action on Tuesday, September 9, when they travel to New Jersey to face Felician. The kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
