Rangers Close Out Regular Season
Denver, Colorado: The Regis University Ranger men’s soccer team fell 4-1 to the visiting No. 11 Colorado Mesa Mavericks (15-2-1, 13-1 RMAC) Sunday afternoon in the final regular season game. The Rangers close out the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with a record of 9-5 and 12-5 overall.
From the opening whistle, both teams battled back and forth sharing possession of the ball. The Rangers saw more scoring chances in the first half but were unable to finish. Colorado Mesa found momentum and the go-ahead goal in the 12th minute of play. The rest of the first half would remain at a 1-0 Maverick advantage.
Colorado Mesa came out strong after halftime scoring three second half goals. Goals two and three came back-to-back in the 54th and 55th minutes to give the Mavericks a 3-0 lead. For much of the second half the Rangers lacked energy and would allow Mesa to score one more goal in the 80th minute of play.
Senior forward Martin Maybin (Belfast, Northern Ireland) notched his 15th goal of the season scoring RU’s only goal of the game in the 87th minute. Junior midfielder Adam Tormoehlen (Highlands Ranch, Colorado) played the ball to Maybin who received it just outside the six-yard box; he then took a touch past a charging Mesa goalkeeper to finish into the back of the net. Unfortunately time was not on the Rangers side and they could not find any more offensive momentum.
The Mavericks slightly edged out the Rangers on shots 14-13. Regis goalkeepers Christian Nicolosi (Highlands Ranch, Colorado) and Connor Adkisson (Federal Way, Washington) shared minutes with Nicolosi earning the start. He allowed one goal and made one save facing four shots. Adkisson made two saves facing ten shots.
The Rangers will be back in action on Wednesday, November 5 in the first round of the RMAC tournament. The opponent and game times are not set yet.
