Rangers Drop Cougars 4-2 in Denver
DENVER, Colo.: It was a beautiful fall day on the Regis Match Pitch this Wednesday, perfect for an intense match of soccer between two Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schools.
Regis, now 5-1 and 4-1 in the RMAC, bested Colorado Christian with a 4-2 decision by the end of regulation with goals by senior Mark Kelly, junior Martin Maybin (2) and freshman Savon Henderson.
An unfortunate mishit by a Regis clear resulted in the first CCU goal of the match in the 19th minute. Shortly after Regis forward Maybin landed his first goal of the day off a cross from junior JB Dobbin. From the right of the 36 yard box, Dobbin sent it in to Maybin who took a touch and used it to score top right.
CCU put another goal through the Ranger posts two and a half minutes later off a free kick and some confusion in front of the goal.
After the score was 2-1, Regis buckled down and would not allow any more chances to the opposition, owning the game with 22 shots compared to CCUs total of four shots.
In the 33rd minute, freshman defender Louis Barrow passed in from the right side to Mark Kelly who chipped the ball past the Cougar goalie off the cross to even the score 2-2.
Kelly picked up an assist shortly after by chipping the ball into Henderson. Henderson took advantage of the position of the opposition's goalie and defense and dribbled the ball through to the right side of the goal.
The Rangers were not done with the half however as sophomore midfielder Connor Campbell came up with a breakaway. He passed down to Maybin who scored from the left of the goal to finish the half, and eventually the match, at 4-2 in favor of Regis.
Freshman keeper Connor Adkisson picked up his first win on the season after spending the entire match in goal, picking up one save during his efforts.
The Rangers put 11 shots on goal in those 22 total attempts, making the CCU goalie make seven saves and allow the four goals.
Next, Regis will travel to UC-Colorado Springs to compete in their next RMAC match on Friday, October 4 at 7:30 p.m.
