Red Foxes Fall At Iona For First MAAC Loss
NEW ROCHELLE, New York - The Marist men's soccer team fell to 4-1-1 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play and 6-6-1 overall with a 5-2 road loss to the Iona Gaels on Oct. 14.
Freshman Simon Lund Jorgensen scored his third goal of the season on a penalty kick in the final minute of the first half. His third PK score of the season evened the contest at 1. The Red Foxes got on the board again on an own goal off the Iona defense in the 85th minute.
A pair of Gaels' goals eight minutes apart in the second half broke the match open. Sophomore Marcos Nunez posted team-highs with three shots on goal and three assists, while freshman Daniel Huertas netted a pair of goals.
Marist fired 10 shots in the contest and had a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.
"I was a little disappointed in our reaction today," head coach Matt Viggiano said. "We played well early in both halves but seemed to get deflated by two mistakes. We are clearly better than the scoreline indicates and have to be prepared to get back to work and focus on Siena next Wednesday night."
The Red Foxes will host the Saints in their penultimate home match of the season at 7 p.m. Oct. 21.
