Men’s Soccer Finishes With 2-2 Tie after Double OT Effort
DENVER, Colo.: Another cold and windy afternoon on the Regis Match Pitch marked the setting for the meeting between the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opponents Regis and Colorado Mesa University.
Valiant efforts on both sides resulted in a 2-2 after 110:00 minutes of play, with goals on the Ranger side coming from junior Arnthor Kristinsson and sophomore Jacob Martinez.
Mesa scored first early in the second half off a saved rebound that was picked up by the Mavs Oliver Querin. With RUs sophomore goalie Christian Nicolosi recovering from his impressive effort on the first save, Querin picked up the ball and scored top right.
Regis answered immediately after with a goal of their own by Martinez. Kristinsson picked up the ball around the left of the 36 yard box and crossed over to Martinez who waited on the other side of the pitch.
Martinez beat defenders left and right to gain a clear line to the goal and ripped it top right of the opposition's keeper's outstretched hands in motivating fashion.
Two more goals would occur before regulation play was up, first by the Mavs in the 63rd minute, again by Querin off a foul kick that he took one-touch to misdirect into the goal.
In the 70th minute, Kristinsson found the back of the net for the Rangers to even things up. He earned the ball left of the 36 yard box, put down the Mav defense by going right and shooting bottom left for the goal.
Despite the Mavs getting 18 shots in, 14 of which they put on goal, the Rangers kept them scoreless through overtime play.
Themselves, Regis put in 10 shots on the day, eight of which the put at the goalie.
Nicolosi and freshman Connor Adkisson spent time in between the posts, both allowing one goal apiece and putting up six saves on the day for a total of 12 for RU.
Regis moves to 6-1-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the RMAC after the match and will head to Colorado Christian University this Sunday, October 13 to take on the Cougars at 11:00 a.m.
