Report: NWSL to expand to Sacramento
The women’s professional game in the United States is expanding. According to a report from the The Athletic, Sacramento is the latest franchise to be added to the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). The Northern California team will be the 12th team in the league, and now second from California after Los Angeles was awarded a team earlier this year.
The Athletic is reporting that Sacramento will join the league in 2021. The Sacramento Republic FC ownership group is responsible for bringing the women’s team to Northern California.
The sudden expansion uptick will offer plenty of opportunities for amateur players looking to continue their career post college, as the young league has depended on the draft to build rosters over the years. There is plenty of talent in Northern California for the new team to look at local talent to build the roster as well.
The sudden expansion into California is a very promising sign for the developing league.
