Royals Dominate Crusaders, 4-0, Saturday
SELINSGROVE, Pa.—The University of Scranton women’s soccer team held Susquehanna University to one shot attempt and got goals from freshmen Gianna Vitolo (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) and Michaela Arbus (Pequannock, NJ/DePaul Catholic) and junior Samantha Russo (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) en route to a 4-0 victory over Susquehanna University in Landmark Conference action Saturday afternoon.
The Royals won for the fifth time in their last six matches to improve to 5-5-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference. Susquehanna fell to 3-6-2 overall and 0-1-2 in the Landmark with the loss.
Scranton jumped out to a 2-0 lead by intermission, as the Crusaders inadvertently knocked a ball into their own goal just three minutes into the contest before Vitolo scored in the 32nd minute, unassisted, for her fourth goal of the season.
The Royals extended their lead to 3-0 when Russo tallied her team-leading fifth goal of the year in the 52nd minute. The goal was the 20th of Russo’s career and moves her into a tie for 15th place on Scranton’s all-time list for most points (58). Arbus closed out the scoring with her third goal of the season in the 72nd minute.
Junior goalie Kelsy McAnelly (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) stopped the only shot she faced to earn her sixth shutout of the season and the 16th of her career, tying her for sixth place all-time in Scranton history with Karin Sandstrom (16 shutouts, 1995-1997).
Scranton, which will return to action this Wednesday, October 10, against Western Connecticut in Danbury, Connecticut at 7:00 p.m., now leads the all-time series with Susquehanna, 10-2-1.
