RU Earns Three CapitalOne Acad. All-District
Rangers Place Three to Capital One Academic All-District Team; Kelly, Seitz and Morabito Receive Honors
DENVER, Colo.: After clinching their second back-to-back RMAC regular season championship, the Rangers have been running on a quite an elevated high, but the accolades are far from over. The men are just as smart in the classroom as on the pitch, placing three to CoSIDA's Capital One Academic All-District Team yesterday.
As seven men from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference total were given the honors, Regis has the most student-athletes honored on the All-District list with three, including seniors Mark Kelly, Garrett Seitz and Nicolas Morabito.
Kelly, native of Antrim, Northern Ireland, has amassed a 3.83 grade point average while studying Business at Regis. He came to RU last year after attending University of Ulster, Jordanstown in Norhtern Ireland and has made an impressive impact on the Rangers' squad.
Just this season, the forward was named to the Academic All-RMAC First Team as well as receiving RMAC Academic Player of the Year accolades.
On the pitch, the senior has earned 31 points after snagging 12 goals, including two game-winners and seven assists for his team. In 42 shots, he has put 17 on goal for a .405 shot on goal percentage.
Also making their way to Academic All-District status, native of Broomfield, Colo., Seitz has amassed an impressive 3.92 GPA while studying Biological and Biomedical Sciences. The defender has been a part of the Rangers for four seasons and has previously earned Capital One Academic All-District First Team and Academic All-America Third Team in 2012.
This season, Seitz was named Academic All-RMAC First Team for his efforts in the classroom and on the pitch. He has helped his team to a 1.61 goals against average and three shutouts against opponents.
Recently, last Wednesday in the deciding match for the RMAC regular season championship against Metro State, the senior started things off for RU, stealing the ball from the Roadrunner defense and breaking down the field, passing the ball in to put the Rangers up 1-0 in the first half. That lead was all too important for Regis as the team used that momentum to best the opposition 4-2 before 90:00 minutes were up.
Also on the team for Regis is fellow senior Morabito, native of Highlands Ranch, Colo. After maintaining a 3.81 GPA while studying Business (specifically Finance and Marketing) in four years as a Ranger, the defender has helped keep RU opponent's to 12 shots a game, only 6.2 of which have been on goal per game.
In past seasons, Morabito has been named Academic All-RMAC Second Team (2012) and this year, he was named Academic All-RMAC First Team. He is part of a big defensive line that has kept opponents to only 23 goals throughout the season.
Next Sunday, Regis will take on an ever-important match against Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, Colo. at 3:00 p.m. The game marks their last regular season match of 2013 before the Rangers host the 2013 RMAC Tournament once again next weekend.
