Rutgers Men Fall Short in Double OT
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (October 15, 2013) – The Rutgers men’s soccer team closed out non-conference play on Tuesday night at Yurcak Field dropping a 1-0 double overtime contest to Bucknell.
The Scarlet Knights fall to 5-8-1 overall and finish up non-conference action with a 3-5-1 mark. The Bison, who have not lost a road game all season, improved to 8-3-1 on the year.
Bucknell scored the golden goal in the second overtime in the 102nd minute of action. Connor Willings’ throw-in reached Mayowa Alli 10 yards out in the center of the box, where he headed the ball into the back left of the Scarlet Knight net.
“Any team is going to dangerous on that,” said head coach Dan Donigan of Bucknell’s throw-in from about 22 yards out that resulted in the game winner. “They got excited every time they had a deep throw-in deep in our end because they knew it was going to be a chance for them. I don’t think they had a whole lot of chances in the flow of the game outside of those opportunities.”
The two squads were evenly matched throughout the game with the Bison holding just a slight edge in shots heading into overtime, 10-9, and ending the game outshooting Rutgers, 14-11. Both teams managed five corners apiece.
Leading scorer Mael Corboz (Green Brook, N.J.) and senior forward J.P. Correa (Montville, N.J.) led RU offensively with five shots apiece. Three of Corboz’s attempts on the Bucknell goal were thwarted by Bison keeper Clarke Fox, who made four saves in the win.
Rutgers netminder David Greczek (Fairfield, N.J.) managed to stop four shots on goals.
Three games remain on RU’s regular season slate, all in American Athletic Conference play. It will be Rutgers’ Senior Day on Saturday when they host USF, the regular season home final against Temple on Wednesday, Oct. 23 and the regular season finale at UCF on Saturday, Nov. 2.
Saturday’s Senior Day will air on RVision presented by AT&T on ScarletKnights.com with Danny Breslauer and Kyle Franco on the call.
