Rutgers Men's Soccer Upsets Louisville
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (November 9, 2013) – Sophomore midfielder Mael Corboz’s (Green Brook, N.J.) goal with just under five minutes remaining in the game lifted the Rutgers men’s soccer team to the upset of top-seeded and seventh ranked Louisville in the semifinals of the American Athletic Conference Quarterfinals on Saturday night at Cardinal Park.
The Scarlet Knights advance to the tournament semifinals at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas, home of Dallas FC of the MLS. RU will face fifth seeded USF, who defeated fourth seeded Temple in other quarterfinal action on Saturday. Rutgers and USF played to a 0-0 double overtime draw during the regular season.
Also advancing to the semifinals in Frisco were the number two seed, Connecticut, and third seeded UCF.
The victory improved Rutgers to 7-10-2 overall and was the Scarlet Knights’ second win over a nationally ranked opponent this season. RU also defeated then-No. 15 Memphis, 1-0, in late September.
Although the Scarlet Knights were outshot 17-10, freshman goalkeeper David Greczek (Fairfield, N.J.) logged nine saves en route to his fifth shutout of the year.
Corboz put away his sixth goal of the 2013 campaign with just 4:31 left in regulation. The sophomore Scarlet Knight took a cross from senior forward Kene Eze (Sayreville, N.J.) and freshman midfielder Eric Sa (Watchung, N.J.) from the left side of the box into the Cardinal goal at the left post.
For Corboz, it was his first goal since capturing the game-winner against South Carolina on Sept. 15.
The AAC semifinals will be held on Friday, Nov. 15.
