Saint Mary's Hires Campbell As Asst. Coach
MORAGA, Calif. -- Saint Mary’s men’s soccer coach Adam Cooper announced the appointment of accomplished college and professional player and former Louisville assistant Charlie Campbell as an assistant coach.
"I'm excited to welcome Charlie to the Saint Mary's family," said Cooper, the winningest coach in SMC program history. "He has championship experience as a college and professional player and gained great experience as a coach in helping Louisville to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments. He has played for and coached under some outstanding coaches and our players and staff will benefit from his experiences."
Campbell, a native of Mundelein, Ill., served the last two seasons as an assistant at the University of Louisville. During his time with the Cardinals, he helped the team advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2013 and the quarterfinals last season. While at Louisville, the program transitioned from the American Athletic Conference into the highly competitive Atlantic Coast Conference.

Following a successful college playing career at Virginia Tech and Louisville, where he appeared in two NCAA semifinals and one final, he played three seasons of professional soccer. In 2013, while playing with Ljungskile SK in Sweden, he suffered a career-ending knee injury and moved into coaching at his alma mater.
Campbell signed with Orlando City Soccer Club in May of 2011. He helped guide Orlando City to the 2011 USL Pro Championship. In 2012, Campbell appeared in 20 of 24 league matches for USL regular season champions Orlando City. Campbell also started both U.S. Open Cup matches for City while notching two assists. Following his one goal and five assists, Campbell was awarded Clubman of the Year by manager Adrian Heath. Campbell was drafted in the second round, 35th overall, of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft by FC Dallas.
Campbell transferred to Louisville from Virginia Tech in the spring of 2010, using his final year of eligibility with the Cardinals. He was a member of a Cardinals side that advanced to the NCAA championship final.
He started in 20 games for the Louisville defense and played a big part in the Cardinals 2010 NCAA Tournament run, scoring a goal in each of Louisville's three NCAA wins over College of Charleston, Ohio State and UCLA. Campbell also provided an assist against Ohio State and UCLA. Campbell was named to the NCAA All-Tournament team.
Prior to joining the Cardinals, Campbell spent three seasons at Virginia Tech. Started in all 19 games for the Hokies in 2009 and finished the season tied for the lead with three goals and four assists. He finished the 2009 season with two game-winning goals He was named to All-ACC Academic team for three straight seasons. He started in 16 games during the 2007 season, finishing the season with four goals and five assists. Campbell recorded a team save to preserve the Hokies' 1-0 win over Connecticut in the NCAA College Cup Regional Final. He earned All-ACC Freshman team honors in 2005.
Campbell earned his bachelor's degree in Finance from Virginia Tech in 2009. He also earned his master's degree in sport administration from the University of Louisville in 2010.
