Saints Shutout Niagara in MAAC Opener
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Nathan Olukanmi scored just 79 seconds into the second half and Adam Myers posted his second clean sheet as Siena shutout defending MAAC Champion Niagara 1-0 in the Saints’ conference opener.
Tom Allen crossed a pass in from the left to Olukanmi who finished for his second goal of the season, both of which have proven to be game-winners. Siena (5-4, 1-0), which opened its 25th season of MAAC competition, has won six straight conference home matches, outscoring the opposition 12-3.
In a rematch of last season’s MAAC Semifinals matchup won by Niagara (2-7-1, 0-1-1) in overtime, chances were few and far between for both sides. Both defenses were stout throughout as the squads combined for just 16 shots with only five on target.
But Myers, who was called on to make one diving save, quarterbacked Siena’s defense to the perfect performance.
The Saints travel to new MAAC member and conference preseason favorite Monmouth for a 7 p.m. kickoff Saturday night.
