Scranton Falls At Haverford, 2-0
HAVEROFORD, Pa. – The University of Scranton women’s soccer team applied plenty of offensive pressure, but couldn’t break through in a 2-0 loss to the host Haverford in the championship match of the Haverford Kickoff Classic on Sunday afternoon at Walton Field.
The Royals (1-1) outshot the Fords, 13-5, but could not come out on top on the scoreboard. Haverford (2-0) scored early in the first half and added the insurance goal midway through the second half. Fords senior goalkeeper Robin Chernow (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) made seven saves to record the shutout.
Scranton had its chances, including a shot by senior midfielder Ellen Walker (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) that would’ve knotted the score early in the second half, but instead it hit the post and a rebound shot by a teammate sailed high. Walker led the Royals with three shots, while four other teammates had two apiece, including sophomore forward Kelsey Bacon (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus), who was the only Royal with two shots on goal.
The Royals also held a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Scranton is now 8-3 all-time against Haverford. This was the first meeting between the schools since 2004.
The Royals return to action on Saturday, Sept. 6, when they host Richard Stockton at 1 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field as part of the Joe Bochicchio Classic.
