SCSU Soccer charts 2-1 win vs. #21 Minot St.
For the second time this season the St. Cloud State University soccer team scored an upset victory over a top 25 national ranked team on Sunday, Oct. 18 thanks to a 2-1 win at #21 Minot State University.
The victory moves SCSU's record to (7-4-2, 6-3-2 NSIC) while Minot State falls to 11-2-1, 9-1-1 NSIC. The Huskies now rank fifth in the NSIC standings with 20 points, while Winona State is in fourth place with 22 points (7-3-1 NSIC). Minnesota State (10-0-1), Augustana (9-1-1) and Minot Stte (9-1-1) complete the top three spots in the current league standings.
Minot State gained control early in the contest with a goal by Ninfa Ramierz at 17:57 that gave the Beavers a 1-0 lead. The Huskies tied the contest at 1-1 with a goal by Maria Kass at 20:02. The goal was unassisted and it was Kass' team-leading seventh goal of the season for the Huskies. The seven goals scored by Kass is the most for a SCSU player in a single season since Alexandra Pafko had 10 goals in 2010.
SCSU senior captain Michelle Cornell added the game winning goal at 79:45 of the contest with a solo assist being credited to Alexa Starr on the play. This was Cornell's first goal of the 2015 season and her 11th career goal. The assist was Starr's second helper of the year and it was her 10th point of 2015. Of note, Kass continues to paces the Huskies this year with 15 points (7 goals and one assist).
Cornell scored on a header that was set up by a perfect cross pass from Starr on a corner kick.
Brittany Plombon was the goalie of record for the Huskies in the contest with five saves to her credit. Minot State outshot the Huskies 15-8 in the game as Celene Johnson had four saves in the nets for the Beavers.
"I was proud of our team effort to compete together," SCSU coach Gretta Arvesen said. "We are committed to getting better everyday and today was a well earned result on the road for the Huskies."
The Huskies will continue their 2015 season on Oct. 23 with a 7 p.m. road game at Concordia St. Paul. The Huskies will finish the weekend with a 1 p.m. road match at Minnesota State Mankato on Oct. 25. Of note, SCSU's last regular season home game of 2015 will take place on Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. at Husky Stadium against Bemidji State University.
