SCSU Soccer tips Winona 1-0 in OT
The St. Cloud State University soccer team (5-2-2, 4-0-2 NSIC) extended its current unbeaten streak to six games with a big 1-0 overtime victory over NSIC rival Winona State University (4-4-1, 1-4-1 NSIC) on Friday, Sept. 30 at Husky Stadium in St. Cloud, Minn.
The Huskies battled through 90 minutes of scoreless soccer before the game was decided in the OT session with a goal by Hannah Marion at 96:33 of the contest. The solo assist on the play was provided by Kylie Cleary, who chipped in a shot that hit the crossbar before Marion took care of business on the rebound.
The goal was Marion's third of the season and it was Cleary's second helper of the year.
"The energized effort led to an outstanding team performance tonight," SCSU coach Gretta Arvesen said after the victory. "We found our tempo early and often and worked relentlessly to break down the defensive block. It was a beautiful night to play at Husky Stadium and we are thankful Husky nation was out in full force."
The SCSU defense was outstanding as the Huskies outshot the Warriors 21-9 in the contest. Senior goalkeeper Julia Clifford charted seven saves in the game on the way to her third shutout of the season. Clifford now owns a sterling 5-2-2 record, which includes a 1.58 GAA.
On offense, Cleary and Brooke Bares led the Huskies with four shots apiece and Marion added three shots in the game. Of note, SCSU dominated as the game went on as it outshot WSU 10-5 in the second half and 5-1 in the OT session.
The victory moves SCSU into first place in the current NSIC standings with 14 league points. Minot State (4-0-0) and Bemidji State (4-1-0) trail in second place with 12 points apiece.
In the first 2016 NSCAA Division II Central Region poll released this week, the Huskies were ranked 10th in the poll.
The Huskies have now won three consecutive games this season and have not lost a game since a Sept. 9 loss to #1 ranked Grand Valley State.
SCSU will continue its 2016 campaign on Sunday, Oct. 2 with a 1 p.m. match at home against Upper Iowa University. The game has been designated as Senior Day at Husky Stadium and our 2016 senior student-athletes will be saluted before the contest. Tickets for the game will be available at the gate and all SCSU students with a valid SCSU student ID card get in FREE.
