SDSU Downs Nevada on the Road, 5-1
RENO, Nev. – San Diego State scored the first three goals of the game and never looked back as it won for the sixth straight game, defeating Nevada, 5-1, Friday night in Reno. The Aztecs improved to a Mountain West-best 5-0 in league play and 10-2-1 overall. The Wolf Pack, meanwhile, fell to 4-9-1 (1-4 MW) with the loss.
The five goals marked a season high for the Aztecs and their total was their highest since scoring seven against Air Force on Oct. 17, 2008, in a 7-0 victory. SDSU has now scored at least three goals in four straight games (3.8 gpg).
Katie Perry got the Aztecs on the board first when she scored in the 16th minute after her shot was deflected off a Nevada defender. Her third goal of the season was assisted by fellow senior Haley Locker, who recorded her third helper of the campaign.
Then, not even four minutes later, SDSU tacked on another goal when Meggie Gulczynski took a free kick, which Jen Rupey volleyed in from in front of the net. The goal for Rupey marked her second of the season and the second straight game in which she has scored a goal. For Gulczynski, the assist was her third of 2014.
The Aztecs took a three-goal lead as the clock hit 29 minutes when Nevada played a ball back to its goalkeeper. In what appeared to be a miscommunication between UNR players, the ball skipped past the Wolf Pack keeper and Nevada was credited with an own goal and San Diego State found itself up, 3-0.
Unfortunately for SDSU, Nevada took back what it gave up 10 minutes later when Angel Meriwether sent a bouncing through ball toward the net that ultimately found the back of the cage. The 40th-minute goal was assisted by Madison Lorenzen and the Aztecs carried a 3-1 lead into halftime.
The score remained same until the 76th minute when Morgan Darling was taken down in the box for the second straight game, which led to a penalty kick. This time, Perry took the kick and was successful, giving SDSU a 4-1 lead.
On San Diego State’s next possession, Locker played a ball in from the left sideline to Kelsey Booth, who touched it into the net from out in front for her sixth goal of the season. The 78th-minute goal extended her scoring streak to six games, a span in which she has accumulated 14 points.
SDSU finished the game with a 13-4 advantage in shots and a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. The Aztecs also earned four corner kicks to the Wolf Pack’s one.
Individually, Booth led all players with four shots and Perry posted a game-high two shots on goal. Goalkeeper Melanie Vaughn made one save and picked up her ninth win of 2014.
As a result of its victory, San Diego State improved to 14-1 against Mountain West foes on the road since the start of the 2011 season and upped its record to 35-4-3 overall against league opponents since 2009. The Aztecs are also 5-0 in MW action for the first time since 2012.
SDSU continues its road trip on Sunday when it faces UNLV in Las Vegas. Game time is set for 1 p.m. PT and the contest will stream live online at GoAztecs.com via the Mountain West Network.
