Seattle women beat Utah Valley
August 29, 2009
MOSCOW, Idaho - The Seattle University women’s soccer team earned their third shutout of the season in a 2-0 defeat over Utah Valley University in Moscow, Idaho Friday evening. With the win over the Wolverines at the neutral sited match, SeattleU improves to 3-1, while UVU falls to 0-2 on the season. Both of the Redhawks’ goals were scored late in the second half. The game-winner was scored by sophomore Lauren Munechika and freshman Maddy Cartwright tacked on a second score; both underclassmen came off the bench to help lead SU to their third win in four games.
In the 69th minute, the Redhawk offense pushed the ball into the Wolverine box in traffic. Senior Jamie Coe crossed the loose ball to the right corner where midfielder Munechika was able to fight off the UVU defense off and tap it into the goal from about three yards out. The game-winning goal was the Sammamish, Wash. natives first career goal and with the assist Coe has now tallied three this season, all game-winners.
Exactly 10 minutes later Seattle got on the board for the second time to solidify the victory. Junior Kara Kuttler went down the field with the ball while weaving between the Wolverine defense. She then saw fellow midfielder Cartwright, who was just inside the box. Cartwright took on the Utah Valley’s goalkeeper Hailey Brown one-on-one and knocked the ball into the right post from 10 yards out. The Redhawk freshman is the first newcomer to get on the board this season.
“It is refreshing to see players come off the bench and make major contributions,” said veteran head coach Julie Woodward. “We struggled in the first half to get the offense going, but the combination of fresh legs and everyone staying focused in the game allowed us to get the win today.”
Utah Valley was unable to create any solid offensive attacks throughout the game; however they were able to outshoot the Redhawks 12 to 11, but were only able to get three shots on goal to SU’s seven, respectively.
“I think our backline played fabulously,” Woodward said. “They maintained a strong wall that did not allow Utah Valley to penetrate our box and get shots off.”
The Seattle defense of Kate Edstrom, Nance Hill, Carlee Norquist and Jordan Salisbury played a solid 90 minutes. The foursome, who have started all four contests this season in the back, have gelled together to combine with goalkeeper Madison Goverde and allow only two goals in four games this season. They have also consistently relieved much of the pressure from the SU ‘keeper between the posts.
Along with having major contributions off the bench, Woodward has been able to call onto the freshmen to step up and deliver. In addition to Cartwright’s goal in the second period, Taylor Bolibol made her first career start. The central midfielder had two shots, both on goal. Also getting the starting call for the second straight contest was Liana Heberer and tallying four consecutive starts is Norquist.
The Redhawks return home to host Eastern Washington University on Monday, Aug. 31, at 4 p.m. at Championship Field.
