Second-half allows Bears to slip past FMU
FLORENCE, SC – Lenoir-Rhyne University outshot Francis Marion University 11-1 in the second half, including the match-winning score, as the Bears went on to beat the Patriots 2-1, Saturday night (Oct. 14) in non-conference men’s soccer action.
Francis Marion (6-6-0) will play at home Wednesday night against Chowan University at 7 p.m. Next Saturday (Oct. 21) will be Senior Night for the Patriots as Georgia Southwestern State University will make its way to Hartzler Field with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m.
In the 19th minute of play, junior Gaspard Mianne played in a cross from the left wing to fellow junior Oliver Drakenhammar in the six-yard box, who headed it past Lenior-Rhyne’s senior goalkeeper Zach King. This gave the Patriots a 1-0 lead.
The Bears came back one minute later as junior Marc Fernandez scored off of an Ismael Noumansana assist at the 20:20 mark, tying the match at 1-1.
After three consecutive shots by the LRU in a 22-second span to start the second half, junior Ignacio De Goya put Lenoir-Rhyne up 2-1 off of a corner kick by Fernandez at the 47:15 mark. This was De Goya’s 10th goal on the season.
The Bears would hold the Patriots at bay for the rest of the match, earning their seventh win of the campaign against two defeats and three draws. FMU’s only shot of the second stanza was a header by sophomore Julian Kersting that forced a save by King at the 72:47 mark.
Francis Marion’s freshman goalkeeper Raul Guillamon Bejar compiled four saves on the night, while King had three.
Lenoir-Rhyne edged out the Patriots in shots, 17-7, and corner kicks, 6-5, in the match.
