Slow Start Dooms Saints on Senior Day
LOUDONVILLE, NY – Manhattan scored twice within the first 11 minutes as the Jaspers soured Siena Soccer’s Senior Day 3-1 at Siena Turf Field. Redshirt senior captain Danilo Markovic scored for the Saints which were forced to play the final 50 minutes with an 11-on-10 disadvantage.
Lorenzo Froehle, Troy Carrington, and Lucas Da Silva all scored for Manhattan (8-7, 5-3) which earned just its sixth win in 30 all-time meetings between the programs.
Froehle opened the scoring in the fifth minute when he finished a free kick from Callum Carsley for the latter’s first of two assists on the afternoon. Just over five minutes later on a counter following one of Siena’s (3-5-7, 1-2-4) 10 corners, Troy Carrington galloped down the field and beat his defender 1v1 as the Jaspers jumped out to the quick 2-0 advantage.
The Saints would halve the deficit in the 23rd minute when Manhattan was whistled for a hand ball in the box. Markovic stepped up and converted the penalty kick for his first goal of the season.
Despite playing down a man for more than half the match, Siena hung tough as it continued to try to battle back and find the tying score. But in the 62nd minute, the Jaspers’ Da Silva added an insurance tally as the Saints saw their four-match unbeaten streak snapped.
Manhattan held a 13-11 edge in shots as the Jaspers halted a three-match losing streak.
Siena will look to bounce back Wednesday when it welcomes defending MAAC Regular Season Champion Quinnipiac to Loudonville for its final home match of 2017. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
