DALLAS (SMU) – SMU men's soccer team was dominant from start to finish in a 4-0 shutout victory Friday night against Loyola University Maryland at Westcott Field.
Four different Mustangs scored, including Talen Maplesand Colten Habecker, who each scored their first goal of the season. Goalkeeper Michael Nelson recorded his third shutout this year and the 20th of his career.
SMU (5-1-0) scored its go-ahead goal in the 16th minute when Jordan Cano threaded a pass through a pair of Greyhound defenders to a streaking Garrett McLaughlin inside of the 18-yard box for the Mustangs first goal. It was McLaughlin's fourth goal of the season, matching his goal output from last year. Cano now has three assists in six matches this season.
The Mustangs kept the pressure on the Greyhounds by adding a second goal at the 28th minute when Bryce Clark cross found Mauro Cichero inside the six-yard box for his fifth goal of the season.
Loyola (3-2-1) was the aggressor early in the second period with the Greyhounds firing three shots within the first eight minutes. However, the Mustangs struck first again when Talen Maples recorded his first career goal after picking up a loose ball off of a free kick in the 55th minute.
The Mustangs registered their fourth goal after the Greyhounds keeper Chase Vosvick made a pair of saves, but the rebound off of the second shot bounced right to Colten Habecker, who punched in his first goal of the season in the 90th minute.
SMU had nine different players record shots, with Cichero and Jacob Cohen leading the team with three each. The Mustangs recorded 15 total shots, with 10 on goal, while defensively allowing seven shots with only three on frame.
