Soccer Edged 2-1 by Hartwick Despite Late Efforts
Box Score
Garden City, N.Y. – The men's soccer team hosted the Hawks of Hartwick College earlier tonight in a non-conference contest. The Hawks pushed out to a two goal lead in the first half. The Panthers closed the gap late in the game, but it was just not enough as they could not net the equalizer as time would run out in favor of Hartwick. With the loss, Adelphi drops to 3-5-1, 1-0 ASC while the Hawks move to 5-4-2, 1-0 MAC.
The game got off to a quick start with Adelphi having their first scoring opportunity when Hartwick committed a foul inside the box, giving the Panthers a chance to take the early lead on a penalty kick. Dan Larenius took the kick and attempted to go left, but keeper Mateo Munarriz made a great diving stop to keep Adelphi at bay.
At 3:15, Hartwick's Cleyon Brown had possession of the ball on the right side and slid a pass in to teammate Greg Mathers who was positioned just ten yards out of the goal and connected with the bottom left side of the net to give his team a 1-0 lead. The Hawks struck again at the 25:24 mark when Tim Crawford sent a pass in to Brown who split two defenders and beat keeper Christopher Herrera to go up 2-0.
In the second half, Adelphi's offense showed signs of life, playing more aggressive on both ends of the field and pressuring the Hawk defense. With 4:36 remaining, Brandon Stoneham fired a shot that was deflected off of a Hawk defender. The loose ball was picked up by senior Mauricio Mora from 15 yards out and found the back of the net to cut the deficit in half.
Despite last minute efforts, the Hartwick defense withstood the Panther charge in the final minutes to seal the deal. The Hawks got the best of Adelphi on shots, 12-10, but had two less corners, 4-6. Herrara made six saves in the loss while his counterpart, Munarriz made three.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, October 8 when they host the Lancers of Longwood University in an Atlantic Soccer Conference matchup. The game is scheduled for a 4pm start.
