Spets Leads Broncs to Win in WAC Opener
MCALLEN – Freshman Hanna Spets scored two goals, including the game-winner, as the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women’s soccer team opened up its first-ever Western Athletic Conference season with a 3-1 victory over the New Mexico State University Aggies on Saturday at De Leon Soccer Complex.
With the match tied at 1-1 at the 64:35 mark, Spets grabbed a loose ball, cut right and sent a shot past Tayler Hammack (1-7-0) to put the Broncs (7-1-3, 1-0-0 WAC) up 2-1.
Just over 11 minutes later, Spets scored off a corner kick from freshman Frida Farstad-Eriksson to complete the scoring.
It was Spets’ first-career multi-goal match. She now had three goals this season.
That made a winner of freshman Aubrie Coley (4-1-3), who made four saves.
The Aggies (1-10-0, 0-1-0 WAC) scored their lone goal against Coley at 48:14 when Katie Smith grabbed a loose rebound, spun and kicked the ball in with her left foot to make it 1-0.
The Broncs responded exactly 10 minutes later when freshman Andreya Barrera sent a shot past Hammack to tie the match at 1-1. It was Barrera’s team-leading seventh goal of the season.
The Broncs outshot the Aggies 11-5, including 7-5 on goal.
