St. Cloud State defeats Bridgeport
The St. Cloud State University soccer team (1-1-1) earned its first victory of the season with a huge 3-2 win over defending NCAA DII national champs the University of Bridgeport (0-4-0) on Saturday, Sept. 14 at Husky Stadium in St. Cloud, Minn.
The Huskies outshot the Purple Knights 12-8 in the contest and also led with two goals in the first half and the game winner in the second half. A hand ball in the penalty box by Bridgeport provided the Huskies with a penalty kick opportunity to earn the winning margin.
Kaitlyn Dziubinski converted on the penalty kick opportunity at 67:51 of the contest, which gave the Huskies a 3-2 lead.
In the first half, SCSU gained a quick lead as Clarie Shea added her first goal of the season at :49. She was assisted on the play by Dziubinski, which was her first point of the season. Bridgeport rallied at 8:36 of the game with a goal by Maegen Doyle to tie it at 1-1.
To close out the first half, St. Cloud State's Nicole Friis notched her first goal of the season at 38:58. The goal was unassisted and it marked Friis' second career goal. Bridgeport tied the contest once again in the second half with a goal by Maegen Doyle at 64:25.
In the nets, Zoe Welsh made five saves to gain the victory for the Huskies. This was her ninth career victory in the nets for the Huskies. Claire Shea led SCSU with four shots, while Hannah Marion, Monica Majeski, Dziubinski and Friis all had two shots apiece in the game.
The Huskies will now open play in the always rugged NSIC with a home game against Bemdji State at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20. Tickets for the match are available at the gate on game day and all SCSU students get into the match for FREE with their valid SCSU ID card.
