St. John's beats #Seawolves 1-0
Queens, N.Y. - Shea Connor's 78th minute goal ruined a gutsy #Seawolves (2-6) road effort and lifted the St. John's Red Storm (4-5) to a 1-0 victory at Belson Field.
Ryan's Reaction
"We battled hard for 90 minutes again today." Ryan said. "It was a competitive, back and forth game but we happened to make one critical, defensive miscue. A good team like St. John's will make you pay for those. We are getting better and better each game, now we just have to make sure it starts to reflect in the win column."
Goal Recap
- After numerous close calls from both sides, Connor finally opened the scoring with a left-footed breakaway goal. Allie Moar started the play with a nice pass to spring Connor on goal.
Highlights
- Stony Brook redshirt senior goalkeeper Ashley Castanio (Oceanside, New York) made two highlight reel saves to send her team into halftime tied 0-0. The first was an acrobatic display of athleticism as she lept high to tip a shot onto the crossbar. The second save demonstrated her aggressiveness as she was quick off her line to stop a breakaway, diving at the forward's foot on contact.
- Sophomore Hannah Groth (Cedarburg, Wis.) had a chance to give Stony Brook the lead early in the second half but she ripped a free kick over the crossbar.
- Trailing by a goal with under five minutes to play, redshirt sophomore Raven Edwards (West Orange, N.J.) made the home team hold its breath when she delicately chipped a pass onto the path of sophomore Leah Yurko (Cumberland, Md.). However, her one-on one opportunity with the keeper was halted when the play was whistled offside.
