Taintor’s Goal Lifts RU to Win Over Army
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (October 21, 2014) – Junior Mitchell Taintor (Storrs, Conn.) moved to the front line against Army on Tuesday night and scored the game-winner in the 20th minute of play in the Rutgers men’s soccer team’s 1-0 win over the Black Knights.
While Army had a slight edge in shots, 13-12, the Scarlet Knight defense limited the Black Knights to only five on goal, including two in the first half and another two in the closing minutes of the contest.
The win saw RU improve to 5-8-1 overall in closing out a four-game homestand. Army, meanwhile, who was coming off a 0-0 draw with an American team on the verge of the Top 25 last week, fell to 5-5-4 overall.
“I was pleased with our defensive effort. We did enough defensively to keep (Army) off the board, which is going to put you in a good position to get a result,” said head coach Dan Donigan. “Army is a tough, hard-working, disciplined team and never gave up. That’s a service academy team that always going to give you everything they have. Fortunately we got the goal from Mitchell, but we could have and should have had more.”
Taintor, with his first goal of the 2014 season and sixth of his career, intercepted a clear by Army keeper Winston Boldt. As Boldt rolled the ball out down the middle, Taintor took possession 25 yards out and charged forward, sending a shot from six yards out into the back of the Black Knight net.
Sophomore David Greczek (Fairfield, N.J.) returned to the net for Rutgers and ended the game with five saves. Two of his saves came late in the game as Army’s Sean Morgan headed in a free kick to the right post. Greczek made the save, but the ball bounced behind the Scarlet Knight keeper. The Black Knights’ Ethan Spivack made a charge at the ball, but Greczek dove on top, making the stop right at the edge of the goal line.
The Rutgers men's soccer team hits the road for its final regular season road game on Saturday, Oct. 25. The Scarlet Knights meet up with Ohio State at 7 p.m. The game will be streamed live by Buckeye Vision.
