Tarver's Header Gives NAU 1-0 Win Over GCU
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona women’s soccer team faced Grand Canyon for the first time since the Antelopes made the jump to Division I and the Lumberjacks were able to come out with 1-0 victory to remain undefeated on the season. Junior defender Sarah Tarver put in a header in the 29th minute of the first half and that was enough for the Lumberjacks to pull off the win.
“There was stretches were we played really well,” said head coach Andre Luciano. “Grand Canyon put a lot of pressure on us in the second half and we have to play with better composure in the future.”
Grand Canyon played very well in the second half, keeping the ball on the Lumberjacks side of the field with numerous scoring opportunities. The Antelopes biggest threat came within the last minute of the match forcing senior goalkeeper Lauren Weaver to make an outstanding save at the top of the crossbar but Northern Arizona were able to come up with enough saves to pull out the win. Weaver continues to hold teams scoreless as she records her fourth shutout of the season.
Northern Arizona has scrimmaged the Antelopes three times in the past three years during the spring and all matches have ended in a tie. For Weaver, it was her first win against the in-state opponent.
“Tonight was a tough game and it was very rewarding,” said Weaver. “It is nice to finally scratch that team off the list and now move on to the next one.”
The Lumberjacks have a quick turnaround as they now turn their attention to Colorado State. The Lumberjacks will face the Rams who may have some challenges traveling to Flagstaff, Ariz. due to the weather conditions in Colorado.
“The most important thing is that everyone is safe,” said Luciano when asked about Colorado State’s team. “I know Colorado State is going to be well coached and we have to make sure we have the right mindset and take care of business.”
Kick off on Sunday’s match is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Lumberjack Stadium.
