Tech Rallies in Second Half to Upset Aquinas
October 20, 2012
For Immediate Release
Grand Rapids, Mich. – The Indiana Tech men’s soccer team got a pair of second half goals from Zach St. Aubin (Manteno, IL/Bishop McNamara) and Aultain Gaye (Grand Rapids, MI/Grand Rapids Central) to overcome a one goal deficit and upset Aquinas College 2-1 on Saturday.
Aquinas entered the day in second place in the WHAC standings and owned a spotless 8-0 record on their home field. However, despite outshooting Tech 26-8, the Warriors were able to go on the road and pick up a huge conference win.
The Saints came out firing, putting Tech’s defense and their keeper Reece Richardson (Halifax, England/Ryburn Valley) to the test early, but Richardson came up with a couple saves in the first few minutes to keep AQ off the board.
Aquinas (11-4-1, 6-2 WHAC) kept the pressure on and finished the first half with 13 shots compared to the Warriors’ one.
After almost 45 minutes of scoreless action, the Saints climbed ahead 1-0 just before half due to an own goal by Indiana Tech.
However, the Warriors were the ones who came charging out of the gates in the second half, creating a couple chances before St. Aubin scored the equalizer at the 55:49 mark.
The Warriors would only get one more shot on goal the rest of the match but they made it count as Gaye headed home the game-winning goal in the 78th minute with an assist from Robbie Kiernan (Dublin, Ireland/North Iowa Area).
Aquinas finished the match with a 26-8 shot advantage and held a 9-3 edge in corner kicks, but the Warriors made the most of their opportunities to capture the win. Richardson ended the day with 10 saves.
The Warriors (8-4-2, 4-1-2 WHAC) resume play on Monday, Oct. 22 when they host Madonna University in WHAC action beginning at 7 p.m. The match was originally scheduled for Oct. 17, but was rescheduled due to inclement weather.
