Thunder Fall to Hope in MIAA Tournament
HOLLAND, Mich. - The Trine University men’s soccer team saw one of their best seasons in school history probably come to a close as they fell to Hope College 2-0 in the MIAA conference tournament. The loss most likely means the Thunder will not receive a bid to the NCAA tournament as they were sixth in the most recent regional rankings. The Thunder finish their season with a record of 13-5-2.
The Thunder offense was thwarted by the Flying Dutchmen defense all afternoon as Trine managed just six shots. The Trine defense did all they could to stop the constant Hope attack as they allowed 31 shots, but just seven were on net.
Matthew VanZytveld scored what would be the game-winner in the 33rd minute from six yards out. Hope would add an insurance goal in the 54th minute as Justin Reamon scored from eight yards away.
Six different Trine players attempted shots, as seniors Foster Webb (Auburn, Ind./Dekalb ), Femi Adediji (Cedar Park, Tex./Vista Ridge) and Andy Ohanesian (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon) each had one shot on goal.
Nick Thon (South Haven, Mich./South Haven) played in what could be his final game for the Thunder as he made five stops on the day.
The 13 wins by the Thunder are the most for a men’s team in over a decade and is the first time a squad has broken double digits in wins during the past 10 seasons.
