Tigers Settle for 1-1 Tie Against Chapman
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Sometimes the scoreboard lies, even when the statistics don't, and Colorado College certainly knows how it feels when that happens.
While Friday's result against Chapman University officially goes in the books as a 1-1 tie, CC coach Horst Richardson knows his still-winless team deserved a better fate.
“It is frustrating, of course, to have a second double-overtime tie at home rather that a victory,” Richardson said after the 0-2-2 Tigers out-shot Chapman by a 29-12 margin, including an 8-0 edge in 20 minutes of overtime. “But we are getting chances and creating opportunities. We're just not scoring, and scoring is the toughest part of this game.
“So sure, it's a little disappointing. But, at some point, I know the dam is going to burst and we're going to start scoring goals in bunches.”
Sophomore midfielder Seth Newby struck for the first tally of his collegiate career late in the first half, heading a cross from freshman Caden MacKenzie over and past keeper Yuki Schafer's outstretched arms put CC up 1-0 lead at Washburn Field.
“It's great to get that first goal,” Newby said, “but I would much rather have a victory.”
But it wasn't to be for Colorado College, which surrendered the equalizer with 14:48 left in regulation. Junior forward/midfielder Gabe Recht-Appel converted on a header after a long lob pass from sophomore Gino Bellasen.
The Tigers, however, had the better of the chances throughout – in terms of both quantity and quality – although both teams were awarded eight corner kicks.
Schafer, who finished with seven saves in the contest, got his fingertips on sophomore Ryan Huettel's bullet from the left edge of the box to preserve a scoreless deadlock midway through the opening half. The Tigers just missed on another marvelous opportunity in the 30th minute, after precision passes by MacKenzie and Brandon Ogilvie, when junior Hunter Martinez shot just wide of the right post from the top of the box.
Less than 13 minutes into the second half, junior Alec Martinez narrowly missed doubling CC's lead when his attempt from 15 yards out rolled outside the far post by inches.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ian Horne made five saves for Colorado College.
The Tigers open their Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference schedule on Sunday when they play host to the University of Dallas at 2 p.m.
