Toreros Fall to USC 4-2
SAN DIEGO, Calif. -The University of San Diego women's soccer team (1-1-0) lost their first game of the season Sunday afternoon, falling 4-2 to the USC Trojans (2-0-0) at Torero Stadium. After being down 4-0, the Toreros rallied to score two goals, but their comeback attempt fell just short.
Jamie Fink scored the first goal for the Trojans in the 23rd minute. The goal came shortly after a corner kick when Toreros' keeper Michelle Craft deflected a Kayla Mills shot right to Fink's feet.
Tanya Samarzich scored the first of her two goals in the 29th minute from just outside the box on the right wing after an Autumn Altamirano pass. Samarzich's strike sailed just past Craft's outstretched hands in to the top left corner. The Trojans wasted no time, tacking on another goal in the 31st minute. This one also came from Samarzich after she one-touched a low cross from Altamirano. The Trojans' final goal came in the 70th minute when Elizabeth Eddy finished a cross from Rachel Smith.
The Toreros wouldn't go down easily however. Senior Devany Savage got the Toreros on the board in the 79th minute when she finished home a deflection off Trojans keeper Ashlynn Ramos following a corner kick.
The Toreros would add one more goal when Michaela Dooley headed in a Taylor Housley cross in the 87th minute. Dooley, who was selected to the All-Tournament Team, now has three goals through her first two collegiate matches. Freshman Jacqueline Altschuld, who scored two goals and had an assist in Friday's win over San Jose State, was the Toreros other All-Tournament team representative.
Trojans keeper Caroline Stanley was credited with the win (2-0-0) after holding the Toreros scoreless through 78 minutes. Michelle Craft, who had five saves, was saddled with the loss (1-1-0).
The Toreros return to action on Friday when they host UC Irvine at 7:00 p.m.
