Trojans edge Francis Marion 2-1
Anderson, S.C. (Oct. 30, 2013) – Senior forward Cody Farrier scored his third goal of the season, but the Francis Marion University men's soccer team dropped its final non-conference contest of the season 2-1 at Anderson University.
The Patriots (8-3-4) will close out the 2013 regular season at Lander University on Saturday (Nov. 2) at 2 p.m., with conference tournament seeding implications on the line. By virtue of Clayton State University's loss to Young Harris College on Wednesday evening, FMU will host a Peach Belt Conference first-round tournament match on Tuesday (Nov. 5).
Facing a 1-0 deficit at halftime, the Patriots quickly tied the match at 1-1 just 72 seconds into the second frame. Farrier received a cross from sophomore Joergen Tesdal, and beat Anderson goalkeeper Bo Haug to his left. Tesdal was credited with his first assist of the season.
However the Trojans (10-4-3) would answer with the eventual game-winning goal in the 65th minute off the foot of Bernd Muxel. Henrique Gazzi had a run down the left flank, and was able to chip the ball into the box to find an open Muxel who gave Anderson a 2-1 advantage.
The Patriots had a few chances to once again tie the match in the final 20 minutes. Sophomore David Sheridan got a shot off in the 73rd minute, but was saved by Haug. FMU's final chances came from sophomore Tore Loevaas who had two shots in the 79th minute, but saw the first shot blocked away, and the second sail just left of the goal.
Haug earned the victory in net while only making two saves. Freshman goalkeeper Nick Stover took the loss despite making four saves. The Trojans held a narrow 15-11 advantage in shots, while each team had three corner kicks.
