Tulsa Battles Saint Louis to 1-1 Tie
The Tulsa men’s soccer team battled Saint Louis to a 1-1 double-overtime tie on Sunday night at Hermann Stadium in St. Louis, Mo. TU moved to 1-1-1 on the season, while SLU also moved to 1-1-1 overall.
“I thought we started off the game really well in terms of our ball movement and the fact that we were going forward pretty well,” Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. “Our goal was a first-class goal by Jacob Gooden that involved three or four guys. SLU got a little bit on top of us at the end of the first half, but I thought our toughness and our discipline were good. Jake made some good saves, but credit to them as they scored a good goal. Once we conceded the goal, we took back the game and felt pretty much in control for the rest of regulation and in overtime. I am proud of the guys for their effort and collective will, and it is good to see us continuing to build good habits.”
Jacob Gooden put the Golden Hurricane on the board at the 19:50 mark as he scored off an assist from Quinton Duncan. TU held onto the 1-0 lead until Grant Owens knotted up the score in the 59th minute. The two teams battled for another 50 minutes, but neither team found the back of the net for the tie.
Saint Louis had an 11-8 lead in shots, while both teams had four shots on goal, and Tulsa had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Gooden had a team-best three shots, all of which were on goal, while Kay Duit added two attempts. Duncan, Matthew Puig and David Viox all had one shot attempt. Jake McGuire logged all 110 minutes between the posts and picked up three saves.
Tulsa will return to action on Friday, September 9 at UAB. Game time is set for 7:00 pm in Birmingham, Ala.
