Tulsa Battles Stetson to 2-2 Tie
The Tulsa men’s soccer team battled Stetson to a 2-2 double overtime tie on Sunday afternoon at BBVA Compass Field in Birmingham, Ala. TU moved to 2-1-2 on the season, while the Hatters moved to 2-2-2 overall.
“We started the game okay in the first five to 10 minutes and created some chances, but we just didn’t play well in the last 35 minutes of the first half,” Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. “Give Stetson credit though as they did a good job of pressuring us. They scored on a nice corner and then we made a bad mistake on a bad pass for their second goal. We have to eliminate the mistakes and perform better, but to our guys’ credit they came back and dominated the second half. They scored two goal, and with a little better composure we could have got a game-winner, but we didn’t. We have to put together a more complete game.”
Sebastian Contreras put Stetson on the board with just 12:53 ticked off the clock as he headed in a corner kick taken by Finn Busmann. Gabriel Diniz gave the Hatters a two-goal cushion in the 25th minute.
Casper Venstad got one back for the Golden Hurricane in the 51st minute as he headed in a cross taken by Ray Saari, and then Jacob Gooden evened the score at the 67:00 mark as he punched in a cross taken by Rollie Rocha.
Neither team found the back of the net in the final 23 minutes of regulation or either overtime period to end the game in the 2-2 tie.
Tulsa had a 20-8 lead in shots, including a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal, and both teams had six corner kicks.
Gooden had a team-best six shots, four of which were on goal, while Matthew Puig added three attempts, and Rocha and Fred Mattioli both had two shots. Jake McGuire logged all 110 minutes in goal and had one save.
Tulsa will return to action on Friday, September 16 against Akron. Game time is set for 8:00 pm at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium.
