Tulsa Captures 2-1 Win Over Pirates
The Tulsa women’s soccer team captured a 2-1 win over East Carolina on Sunday afternoon at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. TU moved to 7-6-1 on the season and 3-1 in the American Athletic Conference, while ECU fell to 4-8 overall and 0-2 in the league.
“I was really proud of our kids because they did what they needed to do, which was protect our home field and win both games,” Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. “I am proud of the effort, and I think our depth played a big role this weekend, especially towards the end of this game.”
Valiree Morris scored her second goal in as many games as she scored from seven yards out off a pass from Rachel Thun in the 19th minute. ECU’s Rachel Renfrow evened up the score in the 41st minute as she punched in a score from 12 yards out off a rebound attempt by Taylor Gaunt for a 1-1 tie at the break.
Morris scored again for TU as she shot from 18 yards out in the 75th minute. The ball bounced off the post and in for her second goal of the day, which would be the game winner.
“Val finally broke through and got her first goal on Friday so she is playing with extra confidence,” Cussen said. “She’s had opportunities to score prior to this weekend, but hasn’t been able to put one away so I’m glad she has this confidence.”
Morris, Thun, Tana Dake and Alyssa Kaiser all had three attempts in the contest, while four others had one shot. Rebecca Defer logged all 90 minutes between the posts and picked up nine saves.
The Golden Hurricane had a 16-14 lead in shots, while the Pirates had a 10-9 advantage in shots on goal and a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
Tulsa will return to action on Friday, October 14 against Memphis. Game time is set for 7:00 pm in Memphis, Tenn.
