Tulsa Dominates Oral Roberts, 5-1
The Tulsa men’s soccer team dominated crosstown rival Oral Roberts, 5-1, on Tuesday night at ONEOK Field in downtown Tulsa. The Golden Hurricane moved to 5-8-2 on the season, while the Golden Eagles fell to 6-5-3 overall.
“I think this is a great environment, with a conference tournament or NCAA Tournament type feeling where you are in a neutral stadium, so being downtown was great for both teams,” Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. “It was an exciting atmosphere and hopefully something we can grow moving forward.”
ORU struck first as Tanguy Guerineau drilled in a penalty kick at the 22:15 mark, but just under seven minutes later Alex Harris evened the score, 1-1. Harris’ goal, the first of his career, came at the 29:11 mark off a cross from Chase Bromstedt. The two teams were knotted up at the break.
In the second half, TU scored four goals in less than 18 minutes. Joe Ruiz netted two quick scores, coming in the 69th and 73rd minutes. The first came on a combination from Gilles Kuhler to Thomas Wells and was shot from 15 yards out up the middle, while his second goal was off a pass from Bromstedt from six yards out.
Harris Partain picked up his second goal on the year at the 75:42 mark as he drilled in a goal from 18 yards out from right to left, and then Juan Sanchez added the final score as he capitalized on a penalty kick in the 86th minute.
“I thought the combination play was great,” McIntosh said. “In the first half they were sitting deep so we had to keep moving the ball quickly. Once we got the second goal the game started opening up a little bit, allowing us to combine. It was great to see them put away their chances. We were really efficient tonight with five goals on 14 shots, and it was a good performance all around.”
Five Tulsa players had two shots, including Ruiz, Bromstedt, Kuhler, Harris and Partain, while four others had one attempt. Bryson Reed logged all 90 minutes in goal and picked up four saves.
Tulsa had a 14-10 lead in shots, including an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal, and a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Tulsa will return to action on Saturday, October 27 at Temple. Game time is set for 6:00 pm in Philadelphia, Pa.
